The first index was created in the year 1896 by Charles Dow and was named after its creator – the Dow (today Dow Jones Industrial Average).

Indices represent a list of tradable stocks that you can invest in. Instead of investing in each stock separately – you invest in the whole list. Every index has a number in its name and that number represents the stocks contained in the given index.
